Shortcuts : Furious Jones , Melanie Dekker , Resistor

Furious Jones - Bread and Circuses (2013)
Who is Furious Jones?
It´s a duo featuring Tom Smith - Vocals/Guitar and Sarah Smith - Drums, and they´re joined by Josh Gilmore on bass on the debut album "Bread and Circuses".
They´re from Idaho and was formed in 2011, the same year they released their debut "Bully" EP and in 2013, this full length album came out that contains 9 quality rock songs.
They have taken their influences from classic rock, grunge and punk but I think beat rock is a suitable and good name for Furious Jones music. It ain´t easy to sit still while listening to these infectious songs.
"Bread and Circuses" is what you get if you blend Mick Jagger solo with The White Stripes, and spice it with Todd Rundgren. If you think quirky and artsy are words that belong in rocknroll, then look no further because this band is crazy enough for you.
Highlights : Get it together, Never, Let me down

Melanie Dekker - Distant star (2013)
Canadian born Melanie Dekker has performed for President Clinton and had a Top 10 hit in Canada with "I said I" back in 2003, she has released 6 albums including the latest "Distant star".
Melanie Dekker deliver acoustic driven folk pop that bring thoughts to singer/songwriters of the 70´s, which isn´t so strange since artists like Emmylou Harris, Tom Waits and John Hiatt has inspired her.
She has a lovely voice and I also like the warm production of her new album, the summer vibes are all over songs like "Boomerang", "The price you pay" and the title track "Distant star".
European fans can look forward to a tour in Aug-Oct this year, but in the meantime, check out her new video of "Distant star" on youtube and lay your eyes on this beautiful woman.
For fans on Tracy Chapman, Dar Williams, Stevie Nicks.

Resistor - First world problems (2014)
"First world problems" is the debut full length from Steve Goldberg´s synth-based solo project, soundwise in the same vein as Human League and OMD but not with same memorable melodies.
There are some cool synthesizer sounds on this album but the vocal performance feels a bit weak I´m afraid, the song "I´ll refuse" can be described as Beach Boys playing around with synths. It´s ok.
The blip-blop of "Vincent Van Gogh" is more suitable for children´s television than a mature synthpop album, however I do enjoy "Ingenue" which bring thoughts to Sparks in their 80´s era. Very nice.
Gary Numan meets ABBA in the new single "Narcissist" and I like it, a good song from an album that is a bit uneven.

Vaudeville set to release new album in 2 parts

Aussie metallers The Amity Affliction are headed for Pittsburgh

Returning with their fourth album, Let The Ocean Take Me, The Amity Affliction have never sounded more vital. Urgent, aggressive, catchy, and diverse, it pushes their signature sound to the next level, providing a riveting soundtrack to the earnest admissions of vocalist Joel Birch, giving their diehard fans the album they both demand and deserve. “We’ve always been in this for the long haul, and we always want to keep getting better,” states Birch. “We toured for five years around Australia almost non-stop before anyone even really noticed us, and then with each of our records our following seemed to double. That’s really humbling, because we never set out to be ‘successful’ in this way, and our fans are really important to us, and we’re just going to keep writing the best songs we can.”

Catfish and The Bottlemen goes 3D

Catfish and the Bottlemen are a rock n’ roll band. There are 4 of them and they are from Llandudno.
That’s all you need to know – the rest you can find out by coming and seeing them play. As an unsigned band they played over 100 shows in 2012, which explains the otherwordly tightness and controlled chaos of CATB live – frontman Van McCann climbing the walls and playing as though his life depends on it, whilst Billy Bibby (lead guitar), Benji Blakeway (bass) and Bob Hall (drums) keep it locked down around him.
Their new single "Kathleen" is out on iTunes, check out the 3D video here:

What´s fair is fair according to The Trews

Opia - powertrio from Perth rocking again

OPIA are a three piece from Perth WA - Progressive / Rock would best describe the trio. The songs are Powerful and catchy, and full of inspiration and meaning !
Already a coveted live band in their hometown of Perth, Undone finds Opia on the edge of the Nullarbor, looking out to the highway with ambition and yearning. For all of the power and self-expression that has gone into their debut album, Opia can deliver it tenfold in person, on stage, amps cranked.
The album Emotion Evolution was released in 2010, now the band is rocking again with the brand new single "One minute ago".

The Nearly Deads announces debut album, out this summer

Nashville-based alternative rock outfit The Nearly Deads are primed and ready to explode. The band has created a buzz of their very own, mixing the polished pop vocals of singer Theresa Jeane with the aggressive grunge-inspired instrumentals of Steve Tobi, Javier Garza, Josh Perrone, and Kevin Koelsch. The Nearly Deads have managed to create a truly unique genre that not only gives a nod to gritty grunge, but brings it back in a way never heard before. Imagine Kelly Clarkson as front-woman of the Foo Fighters.
Their debut full-length "Invisible Tonight" will be released this summer!

Gloryhound with a loaded gun

A group that’s become one of the leaders on the East Coast, Gloryhound is making a name by returning to core values of guitar rock. They play loud, hard, and smart, with a sound that skirts ’70′s classic, but feels crisp and new” says CBC journalist and author of Top 100 Canadian Albums, Bob Mersereau, “the group showed why they have become known as a premiere live act, one that should easily break out in the rest of the country.”
Fall 2013 saw Gloryhound settle in to The Farm Studio in Vancouver, BC, home turf of well-heeled producer Garth “GGGarth” Richardson (Hedley, Rage Against The Machine, Nickelback, Rise Against, Ten Second Epic, Head of The Herd…), who guided them through the making of their new, full-length album, Loaded Gun, while legendary music and entertainment producer, Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Kiss, Pink Floyd, Fefe Dobson, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed…) came on side for the mix and polish of Gloryhound’s Loaded Gun.
The album will be out in June, listen to the track "Loaded gun" here:

Buffalo Killers - Heavy reverie

Buffalo Killers - Heavy reverie (2014) Sun Pedal Recordings
Produced by Jim Wirt
Tracks : 1.Poisonberry tide 2.Dig on in 3.The girl has grown 4.Cousin Todd 5.Sandbox 6.Who you are? 7.Grape peel 8.Louder than your lips 9.Shake 10.January
3,5 out of 5

Heavy reverie is the 5th album from Ohio rockers Buffalo killers, led by songwriting brothers Zachary and Andrew Gabbard.
Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes thinks they´re one of the best rocknroll bands in the world and Buffalo Killers also toured with The Black Crowes and The Black Keys.
Soundwise, they deliver a combo of 70´s grooverock and 90´s grunge. Both soulful and very melodic, this is how a collaboration between Lenny Kravitz and Dave Grohl could end up.
The new album is a grower for sure, I thought it was good the first time I listened to it but after a few spins the music gets stuck like superglue in my head.
Like the first single "Poisonberry tide" which is a fave but I also really love songs like "The girl has grown" and "Sandbox".
If it was 1969, Buffalo Killers would easily fit the Woodstock line up.
For fans of Rival Sons, My Dynamite, Candlebox

The Babys - I´ll have some of that

The Babys - I´ll have some of that (2014) Independent
Produced by Tony Brock
Tracks : 1.Every side of you 2.All I wanna do 3.Sunrise goodbye 4.After midnight 5.I see you there 6.Grass is greener 7.These days 8.Uncivil war 9.You saved my life 10.It´s a gas 11.Stay the night 12.I´ll have some of that 13.When life goes right 14.Not ready to say goodbye
3,5 out of 5

What do you say about this unexpected comeback? "I´ll have some of that" is the first album in 34 years from The Babys, a classic AOR band that released 5 albums between 1976-1980.
This time around, they are rocking without original frontman John Waite which seems like a stupid thing to do but let me tell you, it works.
And by the way, John Waite gave his permission to Wally and Tony for putting The Babys back together again.
New lead singer John Bisaha do fill Waite´s shoes in a respectable way, his singing even reminds a bit of Waite without being a copy. Original members Wally Stocker and Tony Brock also recruited guitarist Joey Sykes for the Mk 3 version of The Babys, the bass parts on the album are handled by Phil Soussan (Ozzy) and Dustin Morgan.
So what have these babys done after the split in 1980? Well, it´s no secret that Waite became a popular solo artist with the smash hit "Missing you" and Jonathan Cain entered the rockstar throne as a member of Journey.
Ricky Phillips formed Bad English with Waite and Cain in the late 80´s but is now a member of Styx.
Wally Stocker and Tony Brock were both touring members with Rod Stewart, not to mention that Brock also co-wrote the song "It won´t be you" (the b-side of Steve Perry´s single Missing you").
So is this album any good then? Yeah, it truly is. I´d like the way how they re-created the sound of their early albums in the late 70´s but perhaps more rocknroll a la Free than AOR but I don´t mind.
You get a lot of flashbacks in the first single "Not ready to say goodbye", I guess it´s ok to steal from yourself. Anyhow, sit back, relax and enjoy some good time rocknroll.
Highlights : Every side of you, I see you there, It´s a gas

Mk 1 (1976-1979) : John Waite - Lead Vocals/Bass, Wally Stocker - Guitars, Tony Brock - Drums, Michael Corby - Keyboards
Mk 2 (1979-1981) : John Waite - Lead Vocals, Wally Stocker - Guitars, Tony Brock - Drums, Jonathan Cain - Keyboards, Ricky Phillips - Bass
Mk 3 (2013-current) : Wally Stocker - Guitars, Tony Brock - Drums, John Bisaha - Lead Vocals/Bass, Joey Sykes - Guitars

Melodic time again

I did a couple of reviews again for my former site, which was fun.
Like a guest writer with two exclusive reviews of two amazing box sets, Saxon and Alan Parsons Project.
I will still continue to write reviews here at my blog but once in a while, you can expect a review or two at melodic!

Regarding my band Blue Cow Kent, we have now recorded 5 tracks for our debut album Phantom Cathedral. We´re halfway into it so to speak, but we hope to have it out by October.
The next single "In case of emergency" should be out before summer, it´s a song that can be described as Thin Lizzy meets Aldo Nova.

Shortcuts : Winchester Revival , XY , Gypsy Lumberjacks

Winchester Revival - Eyes in the canopy (2014)
"Eyes in the canopy" is the 4 track debut EP from California quintet Winchester Revival ,a band with a sound that finds home in genres like noise rock, post-punk and indie.
The guitarist just love the reverbeffect, I bet he doesn´t leave home without it. The band has produced the EP themselves and I believe they could´ve had some help with it because the sound tend to get a bit messy in some moments. They do shine like in the melancholic rocker "Matterhorn", a song that bring thoughts to both The Smiths and Radiohead.
Not an EP that gives me the goosebumps but I guess it´s quite ok.
Recommendable if you like Buho, Courtesy Drop, Statelines.
2 out of 5

XY - Memories now dreams (2014)
"Memories now dreams" is the 3rd album from French rock/metal band XY, heavily influenced by Pendulum, Linkin Park and Avenged Sevenfold.
These guys don´t hold back in blending varied styles like electronica, industrial rock and modern metal.
But I get a little confused too because a few songs at the end of the album gives you a dose of 80´s rock, I guess they got plenty of room in their backyard for all decades they take their ideas from.
KoRn meets Celldweller in "Crush you", that metallic groove will get you up in no time. The resolute metal song "Deathbat" is a tribute to Avenged Sevenfold, it sounds like a given tune on stage.
One of the best songs is the upbeat "When you´re not with me", without doubt the strongest chorus on the album. A more radio ready song than "Virtual life" is hard to find here, I bet Jared Leto is proud to hear his Thirty Seconds To Mars has put a mark on the map of modern rock. This is a good example!
Bang your head, metal health will drive you mad!
3,5 out of 5

Gypsy Lumberjacks - Pulling upon the strap (2014)
Gypsy Lumberjacks are a Minneapolis based jam band with a sound consisting of a mix of Americana, jazz, bluegrass and Caribbean. But they´ve got a terrible bandname and the artwork bring thoughts to something that could´ve been released in the 60´s, but we´re not dealing with psychedelic 60´s pop here.
They are known for never performing with a setlist, they rarely play a song the exact same way twice or in the same order. The Lumberjacks are great musicians without doubt and the songs truly swing, it´s not easy to describe what they sound like but you could say Gypsy Lumberjacks sound a bit like a mix between The Band, Phish, Santana and Allman Brothers.
Perhaps not the most commercial music around but I did enjoy the songs, especially Al DiMeola-like "Caspian´s march".

Lyon Apprentice release new video off debut EP

‘Lyon Apprentice’ is two brothers Adam & Nathan Lyons. Growing up in north Queensland before relocating to the Gold Coast, they both shared an interest for music from a young age. This led them to writing their first song together for Nathans school graduation, though it wasn't until years later that they would continue what they started.
The duo traveled to Cairns in February last year teaming up with Mark Myers (The Middle East, Emma Louise) to co-produce their debut EP which was mixed by Catherine Marks (Foals, Interpol) at Assault & Battery Studios in London.
They have just released their new video "Be careful", it is their 3rd single off the debut EP "Be honest, be wild, be free", released on April 4th.

The Sonic Revolvers deliver a modern twist of grunge

The Sonic Revolvers deliver a modern twist on the classic grunge sound of the 90’s.
Having gigged extensively to develop their signature live sound the band entered the studio to record new material with award-winning producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals, Bullet for My Valentine.)
Wishing Well’ is the latest offering from these studio sessions and perfectly captures the energy and lyrical intensity of band’s sound. The single will be released on June 2nd, listen to the song here:

A fresh breath of the 60´s with The Rebel Light and their cover of Be my baby

Los Angeles based pop band The Rebel Light posted their cover of the 60´s hit "Be my baby" at the link, it was originally recorded by The Ronettes.

Owenstone offer peek at upcoming EP with Summer Lane free download

“Summer Lane” is a kind of anthem illustrating the innate calling for departure and escape from conventional life.  We all feel it at times, and Owen has probably acted on it more than most.  He’s quit film school, which was paid for by a state scholarship, just to hitchhike and write songs for seven months.  He also intentionally went to jail at age 18 just to see what it was like.  Owen has made a living designing film sets and singing and writing in the studio for Japanese pop music, as well as being a Craigslist handyman.  One of the only consistencies in Owen’s life has been the companionship of his dog, “Roadie.”

After recruiting fellow musicians Gerry Doot, Anthony Marks, Erik Hallsey, and Greg Tariloff, Owen partnered with producer Mick Smiley to record Owenstone’s indie-rock single “This Face.” An EP ultimately followed, one that the band will release in May.

The Further Adventures of Down N Outz feat Joe Elliot

Joe Elliott of Def Leppard and London's own Quireboys formed the Down 'n' Outz after being asked to open for Mott the Hoople at London's Hammersmith. Their love for the band inspired them into recording "My ReGeneration" (2010), an album full of Mott the Hoople related tracks.
They had so much fun the first time, they've decided to do it again! Produced by Elliot and Def Leppard co-producer, Ronan McHugh, The Further Adventures of.... contains 12 tracks, all Mott the Hoople songs, continuing to prove their reverence for this great band.
The further adventures of.... was released on April 22nd.

Combining the sound of vintage heavy metal with new age electronic elements, Blacklite District is a band on the rise. Backed by manager Jeff Hanson, the group has excelled it's musical ability, songwriting, and performance values up a lot over the last year

Aussie rock band My Echo release self titled EP in May

MY ECHO's debut EP title The New Approach (2011) says it all; a DIY project that has four young musicians writing and producingmusic they truly believe in. Self funded, self motivated and true to their passion for old school rock n’ roll laid over the solid foundation of punk rock MY ECHO is a definite must see.
Their new self titled EP will be out on May 2nd, listen to the new single "Lonesome city" here:

Veridia - Inseperable

Veridia - Inseperable (2014) Word Entertainment
Produced by Veridia
Tracks : 1.We are the brave 2.Disconnected 3.Furious love 4.Mechanical planet 5.Mystery of the invisible
3,5 out of 5

So it´s trendy to blend dubstep with rock, I´m thinking of bands like Nero, Muse and Killbot. When Nero and Killbot leans more towards dubstep, you will only hear traces of it in Muse´s progressive rock. Just like the female fronted Veridia from Nashville, their debut "Inseperable" EP is a heavyweight electro rock affair with radio ready choruses.
But if you add a flavor of the orchestral rock of Skillet with the dubstep of Skrillex, you´re gonna get the song "Disconnected".
Another song like "Furious love" bring thoughts to Carpark North, perfect for the mixtape.
Overall a great EP from a promising band.
For fans of Reabo, Sonic Boom Six, Carpark North
